Coffee dilution

Use a measured starting TDS and a target TDS to calculate how much water to add.

The default 1.8% is a worked example, not a measured or predicted strength of your coffee. Target TDS must be above zero and no higher than the starting TDS.

Use a measured starting TDS, not one guessed from brew ratio. All quantities are masses. This assumes no losses and negligible coffee solids in added water.

The calculation

Dissolved coffee solids = starting coffee mass × starting TDS ÷ 100. Final mass = starting mass × starting TDS ÷ target TDS. Added water = final mass − starting mass. This is a mass balance assuming complete mixing, no losses, and added water with negligible coffee solids.

A worked example

Bring a measured coffee down in strength

A 250 g coffee at measured 1.8% TDS contains 4.5 g of dissolved coffee solids. To reach 1.35%, the final mass is 333.33 g: add 83.33 g water, assuming the added water contributes negligible coffee solids.

A few useful answers

Understand the numbers. Keep your own taste.

Will this tell me the best ratio?+

No. Ratios, pour splits and times are user choices. The presets are editable examples, not universal recipes or a promise of extraction or flavor. Adjust to your coffee, grinder and brewer.

Does 600 g of brewing water make 600 g of coffee?+

Not necessarily. Grounds retain water, and evaporation and equipment also affect the collected drink. The batch planner scales input water and does not predict final beverage volume.

Can I estimate TDS from the brew ratio?+

Brew ratio alone does not provide measured strength. Use an appropriate coffee refractometer and its measurement procedure for a real TDS result. The dilution example is illustrative.
